Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM) reached the Triple Crown status in 2021. Now, both EQUIS (in May) and AMBA (in August) issued their reaccreditations for another five years, confirming the quality of the School.

Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM) has now received its reaccreditation through both the European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS) and The Association of MBAs (AMBA). Thereby, the School holds its position in the ranks of top business schools worldwide awarded with a “Triple Crown”.

The triple accreditation, or the Triple Crown, is the combination of accreditations held by around 130 business schools worldwide. It is awarded by the three largest and most influential business school accreditation organisations: EQUIS, AMBA and AACSB.

For several months, staff members at Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM) have been working on the reports for EQUIS and AMBA, anticipating the delegations of the respective institutions' site visits during the spring of 2024.

In May, the School received the long-awaited news that LUSEM has been reaccredited by EQUIS. In August, we got the official word of the reaccreditation by AMBA. Both accreditations are valid for another five years.

This is LUSEM’s third five-year EQUIS accreditation in a row, and its second five-year AMBA accreditation in a row. LUSEM was accredited by AACSB for the first time in 2021 and is up for re-evaluation in 2026.

A mark of prestige but also a reaffirmation

“Both reaccreditations are not just a mark of prestige but a reaffirmation of our decades-long commitment to excellence in every facet of our School, and it aligns perfectly with our mission to make a difference,” says Joakim Gullstrand, Dean of Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM).

Now, LUSEM will continue the work to maintain and elevate the standards recognised by the accreditation systems.

“This includes refining our programme offerings, enhancing alumni engagement, and expanding our global footprint. Our efforts will focus on delivering transformative education and impactful research alongside fostering internationalisation, sustainability, and active engagement with the corporate world, thus ensuring our ongoing commitment to excellence in all aspects of our activities,” Joakim Gullstrand concludes.

“Strengthens the University as a whole”

Erik Renström, Vice Chancellor of Lund University, comments on the good news:

“Lund University School of Economics and Management has once again demonstrated its high quality over time, and I would like to pay tribute to all its staff, students and corporate contacts who contribute to this. This is a seal of quality that helps to strengthen Lund University as a whole,” says Erik Renström.

Saga Mossberg was Vice President of the School’s student union, Lundaekonomerna until June 2024:

“The School maintaining their accreditations is important for us students. It shows that we have a high-quality education and that we can compete in an international market. That will be a big advantage for the students when moving on from their studies. Lundaekonomerna are proud to have participated in and contributed to these accreditations,” says Saga Mossberg.

Her successor on the position, Sebastian Krook, agrees:

“As the Student Union, we are proud of our faculty for retaining its Triple Crown and achieving a full five-year extension by both EQUIS and AMBA. This is crucial for maintaining the School’s competitive edge and opening doors for our students after graduation. We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with the faculty in our joint work to develop LUSEM and its education in the coming years,“ says Sebastian Krook.

A closer look at two Master’s programmes

AMBA has specifically looked at the Master’s in Management Programme and, for the first time, also the Master’s in International Strategic Management. The latter is also previously ranked among the best Master’s programmes by Financial Times.

“Not only does the School receive this stamp of approval from AMBA, but specifically it means that our Master’s programmes in Management and International Strategic management perform at a high international quality level including strong corporate connections,” says Margareta Dackehag, Quality Assurance Coordinator at LUSEM.

Lena Henningsson is the Chair of the Faculty Board at LUSEM. She comments:

“I am delighted for LUSEM to be reaccredited as a Triple Crown Business School. This is the result of consistent and continuous high performance and quality in our everyday activities, as well as our long-term strategy. This internationally recognised distinction, achieved through a collective effort by our dedicated students, faculty, staff and partners, provides us with an excellent platform to continue our ambitious work – to make significant contributions to a sustainable society and to a better world.”

Facts: AACSB, AMBA & EQUIS

AACSB (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) was founded in 1916 in the USA. The fundamental purpose of AACSB accreditation is to encourage business schools to hold themselves accountable for improving business practices through a commitment to strategic management, learner success, and impactful thought leadership. AACSB achieves this purpose by defining a set of guiding principles and standards, coordinating peer review and consultation, and recognising high-quality business schools that meet the standards and actively engage in the process.

AMBA (The Association of MBAs) accredits MBA, DBA and Master’s Degree programmes in general management with the aim to maintain standards and fostering innovation in global postgraduate management education. The accreditation philosophy is centred on impact, employability and learning outcomes. Only programmes that demonstrate the highest standards in teaching, learning and curriculum design; career development and employability; student, alumni and employer interaction achieve AMBA accreditation.

EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) accreditation is a comprehensive institutional accreditation system for business and management schools, run by EFMD. The EQUIS accreditation ensures rigorous quality control, benchmarking the school against international standards in terms of governance, programmes, students, faculty, research, internationalisation, ethics, responsibility and sustainability, as well as engagement with the world of practice.

More on the accreditation process

Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM) is one of around 130 business schools around the world that are triple accredited, i.e. have achieved the 'Triple Crown’ by being accredited by both AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. Schools apply for accreditation, but the outcome is not certain. Before receiving a positive decision, institutions go through a rigorous review process, with accreditation bodies looking variously at things like the school's teaching, research and outreach.

There is a cost associated with going through the accreditation process. At the time of writing, only two universities in Sweden have triple accreditation: LUSEM in Lund and the School of Business, Economics and Law in Gothenburg.
