Times Higher Education (often referred to simply as THE) World University Rankings compiles and publishes the “World University Rankings by Subject” each year. In the latest ranking, released on 21 January 2026, LUSEM’s subject area Business and Economics once again performs strongly, climbing from position 87 to 81.

The School’s subject area continues to rank highly

Lund University is ranked in 10 out of 11 subject areas and improves its position in 3 of these 10 subjects – including Business and Economics. It is once again encouraging to report that the School’s subject area maintains a strong position in THE’s highly regarded ranking, which is frequently referenced in educational contexts worldwide. The subject area, listed as Business and Economics, is ranked 81st globally.

Eleven subject areas ranked

Each year, THE compiles and publishes the World University Rankings by Subject, and the eleven broad subject areas are Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Medical and Health (formerly Clinical and Health), Computer Science, Education Studies (formerly Education), Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences.

The THE subject rankings encompass 148 individual disciplines. They are developed using the same comprehensive and trusted methodology as the THE World University Rankings. However, metric weightings are carefully adjusted for each subject, ensuring that the rankings accurately reflect disciplinary priorities, fairly assess institutional strengths and provide meaningful, field-specific insights.

This year’s ranking includes 990 institutions from 85 countries and territories. The ranking is based on 18 rigorous performance indicators, and even if they are the same as the THE World University Rankings they have been carefully tailored to reflect the distinctive qualities within for example the business and economics subject area.

The Business and Economics table assesses performance across three core disciplines: business and management; accounting and finance; and economics and econometrics. LUSEM achieved very high scores on two of the most important criteria Industry (93,5), that looks at the ability to help industry with innovations and inventions and Research Quality (78,9), that looks at the role in spreading new knowledge and ideas.
