Anna Breman Appointed New Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand

Anna Breman

Lund University School of Economics and Management is proud to congratulate our Honorary Doctor, Anna Breman on the prestigious appointment as the new Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

Anna Breman served as First Deputy Governor of the Riksbank from September 2022 until she accepted the new position by the end of September 2025. She earned her Ph.D. in Economics in 2006 and has since built a long and solid career in the banking and finance world, with previous roles including Chief Economist and Global Head of Macro Research at Swedbank. She has also worked for the World Bank, served as an Advisor at the Swedish Ministry of Finance, and worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Arizona. All in all, she is considered one of Sweden's most influential economists.

When she was appointed Honorary Doctor at LUSEM in 2024, it was partly in appreciation of her ability to bridge academia and practice, and for her efforts to make economic research relevant to societal development.

Taking the step into the role of Governor of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is a recognition of Anna Breman’s experience and competence but it also demonstrates the international influence that Swedish economists and researchers can wield. She will assume her new position on December 1, 2025.

Lund University School of Economics and Management looks forward to continuing to follow her work and hopes for future opportunities for collaboration where experiences from both the Riksbank and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand can benefit our students and researchers.
