Jonas Lundstedt has followed a career path driven by curiosity about social issues and a commitment to evidence-based policymaking. Today, he works as an auditor ensuring that public resources are used efficiently, drawing daily on the theoretical and practical training from his PhD years.
You graduated with a PhD in Economics from LUSEM. Can you tell us more about what you have been up to since your graduation?
“After completing my PhD, I started working as an analyst at the Swedish Higher Education Authority. Much of my work there involved examining how the COVID-19 pandemic affected higher education. In 2024, I moved on to work with performance audit at the Swedish National Audit Office. At the National Audit Office, I am involved in auditing whether state resources are used efficiently, and whether political decisions serve their intended purpose.“
What motivated you to choose Lund? How did you decide that this programme was the right fit for your academic and career aspirations?
“I completed my bachelor’s degree at Lund University, so I already knew it was an excellent university and a nice place to live. After studying for my master’s abroad, I therefore decided to return to Lund to begin my doctoral studies. I have always been interested in social issues, particularly those related to education and the labor market, and economics provides the tools to address these topics. Pursuing a PhD in economics therefore felt like a natural choice.“
During your studies, were there any specific project, research, or course that had a great impact? How do you apply this knowledge in your work today?
“There were so many things that influenced me! The theoretical courses equipped me with effective tools to reflect on and analyze different problems. The more practical courses gave me skills in managing and analyzing data. I use both skill sets almost every day in my current job.“

What are your favourite memories from your studies at LUSEM?
“I learned a great deal at LUSEM. However, if I had to choose a favorite memory, it would be all the fun I had thanks to the fantastic colleagues and students!“
Jonas’s journey illustrates how a PhD can open doors far beyond academia. With a strong foundation in analytical thinking, data work, and a genuine interest in societal challenges, he has built a meaningful career in public service, showing that doctoral training can play a vital role in shaping effective policy.
