The award committee's citation
Professor Karin Berglund from Örebro University and Stockholm University in Sweden and Associate Professor Karen Verduijn from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands have contributed significantly to advancing critical and alternative perspectives within entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education. By developing collaboration with a wide range of individuals and communities, they have challenged traditional perspectives of entrepreneurship, advocating for a broader understanding that takes into account social, cultural, and planetary dimensions.
The research conducted by Berglund and Verduijn has had a profound influence on the field of entrepreneurship education and has encouraged educators to rethink conventional teaching content and methodologies. Their critical approach integrates social, ethical, and political considerations into the curriculum and promotes holistic and inclusive programs that equip students to address complex societal challenges through entrepreneurial activity. Their work has not only shaped educational practices, but also sparked significant policy discussions and academic debates, and contributed to a shift towards more socially aware, equitable and reflective approaches to entrepreneurship. By championing innovative pedagogies and critical perspectives, Berglund and Verduijn have left an indelible mark on the field, making them highly worthy candidates for the 2025 European Entrepreneurship Education Award.
