"I am pleased that IMS has acknowledged the collaborative nature of my work. Developing efficient computational tools requires cooperation between specialists from many different areas,” Malgorzata Bogdan comments.

We are happy to announce that Malgorzata Bogdan, Professor of Statistics at Lund University School of Economics and Management and University of Wroclaw, has been named Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS).

Professor Malgorzata Bogdan receives the award ”for innovative contributions to high-dimensional statistics, particularly in multiple testing and variable selection, insightful connections between Bayesian and frequentist approaches, for successfully integrating methodological work with applications in genetics, and leadership in fostering scientific collaborations.”

Malgorzata Bogdan, you have recently been designated as an Institute of Mathematical Statistics Fellow, class of 2024. Congratulations! What does this distinction mean to you?

“It is an important and unexpected recognition, as my work is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary. I am very happy that my research, which is mainly driven by applications, has been recognised by IMS. Understanding the statistical and computational properties of machine learning tools is crucial for constructing efficient solutions, and this is a part of my research that I value greatly.

I am also pleased that IMS has acknowledged the collaborative nature of my work. Developing efficient computational tools requires cooperation between specialists in different areas of statistics, computer science, and experts in application fields such as genetics or finance. Therefore, I must express my gratitude to my many professional colleagues and students with whom I have had the pleasure and fun of working,” says Malgorzata Bogdan, Professor of Statistics.

The Institute of Mathematical Statistics is an international professional and scholarly society devoted to developing, disseminating, and applying statistics and probability. The institute publishes some of the top journals in Statistics and Probability and holds several major international conferences every year.

It may not be commonly known, but our Department ranks among the oldest departments of Statistics in the world – we are now nearing 100 years of existence!

Krzysztof Podgorski, you are the Head of the Department of Statistics. What does it mean to your department to have an IMS Fellow within its ranks?

“It is a great honour and distinction for the Department and the entire statistics community in Sweden. The IMS is the world's largest international organisation targeting mathematically oriented statisticians with more than 1 500 members (the Bernoulli Society – a ‘sister’ organisation, is the second with around 1 000 members). It may not be commonly known, but our Department ranks among the oldest departments of Statistics in the world – we are now nearing 100 years of existence! Thus, this distinction adds to our recognition and reinforces our reputation within our discipline,” says Krzysztof Podgorski, Professor of Statistics and Head of the Department of Statistics at Lund University School of Economics and Management (LUSEM).

Krzysztof Podgorski further develops the concrete, measurable benefits for the Department and LUSEM from Professor Bogan’s status as IMS Fellow:

“It is well known that, in academia, recognition is the driving force behind any success. In measurable terms, this attracts better candidates when we hire, allows our Ph.D. to find better positions, and enables young researchers to establish networks with world-renowned institutions. For instance, among this year's fellows, we find affiliations such as MIT, Caltech, Cornell, Yale, Stanford, Duke, McGill, USC and Columbia among others.

Last but not least, in Professor Malgorzata Bogdan, we have a brilliant researcher who serves us with expertise and delivers research recognised by her peers. This builds confidence and pride in our accomplishments!”

About IMS and IMS Fellows

For almost 90 years, the title of IMS Fellow has represented a prestigious honour. The fellows exhibit exceptional mastery in statistical or probabilistic research or have showcased remarkable leadership that has left a lasting impact on the field.

Established in 1935, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) is a member organisation that fosters the development and dissemination of the theory and applications of statistics and probability. The IMS has over 4 700 active members throughout the world. Approximately 10 per cent of the current IMS membership has earned the fellowship status.
