Sofia graduated from Lund University’s master’s program in Economic Growth, Population and Development in 2022 and has since built a career in international relations, currently working as an Adviser at the UN Headquarters in New York. In our interview, Sofia shares her journey from studies to the UN, reflecting on what inspired her to choose this path and the experiences that prepared her for it.

Sofia, you graduated from the master’s degree programme in Economic Growth, Population and Development in 2022. Can you tell us more about what you have been up to since your graduation?

Since graduating, I have primarily worked in international relations and sustainable development within government agencies.

What motivated you to choose to study Economic Growth, Population and Development? How did you decide that this programme was the right fit for your academic and career aspirations?

I have always been very interested in understanding the causes of global inequalities, the relationships between countries, and the factors influencing different paths of development.

Both the content and structure of the studies were excellent. I also greatly enjoyed the workshop-based studies on Innovation and Sustainable Development

I was very drawn to this programme also due to its interdisciplinary nature and focus on quantitative research methodologies.

Today you work as Adviser in New York at the UN Headquarters, what can a typical work week look like for you? What are your main responsibilities?

The work I do here in New York is very dynamic, with tasks and responsibilities varying from week to week, and sometimes day to day, it is therefore requiring a lot of flexibility and adaptability! My main tasks are to provide support to the processes and negotiations and promote Sweden’s priorities.

During your studies, were there any specific project, research, or course that had a great impact on your understanding of global economic and social issues? How do you apply this knowledge in your work today?

The studies about China and Asia-Pacific Economy were an eye-opener for me. It was so fascinating to delve into the forces behind the rapid transformation of China and the Asia-Pacific region, as well as its contemporary relevance in the context of globalization and shifting trade and relations. Both the content and structure of the studies were excellent. I also greatly enjoyed the workshop-based studies on Innovation and Sustainable Development, where we got to develop our own projects addressing climate and environmental challenges. One of the highlights was reading Doughnut Economics by Kate Raworth, which I highly recommend.

What advice would you give to current students or recent graduates of Lund University who aspire to work in international economic and social affairs? Are there any particular skills or experiences you believe are essential for success in this field?

For current students, my advice is to start preparing for life after graduation while you're still studying. Work, volunteer, or intern alongside your studies.

I found it incredibly inspiring to meet so many international students at LUSEM and in Lund with diverse study backgrounds, knowledge, and career goals. It was a great preparation for working in cross-cultural teams.

Gaining work experience, as a volunteer or intern, allows you to apply theoretical knowledge from your studies in real-world situations. For some, it can even be beneficial to consider taking a study-break for a semester or two. Who knows, you might discover new interests or areas of expertise that guide your future academic or professional path. Remember, there's no rush. I found it incredibly inspiring to meet so many international students at LUSEM and in Lund with diverse study backgrounds, knowledge, and career goals. It was a great preparation for working in cross-cultural teams. Above all, have fun, support each other, and make the most of your time in Lund!
