Did gendered marketing stop the electric car?

Did branding electric cars as feminine hold back their development for more than a hundred years? In 1900, only 22% of all US cars produced were gasoline-driven, the rest split between electric and steam cars.

The early 20th century saw three realistic contenders for automotive power: electric, steam and gasoline. In those early years of automotive history, many favored the electric.  

But what explains the success of the gasoline cars and the historical demise of the electric?
