Kalaudioscope: Reinventing the live music experience

In a digital concert hall with the possibility of an individualized, tailored experience of sound and image, every visitor would be able to have their own unique experience, just like in the physical world.

Growing market for live streaming

One in four internet users watches live streams at least once a week, and the live streaming market is expected to grow by 32% between 2023 and 2032. Interactivity and minimal latency are crucial for users engagement. By exploring thematic areas such as Audio, UX and New Artistic Formats, the portfolio explores how today's passive broadcasting can be transformed into unique, personal, immersive and interactive streaming experiences instead.

Background

LUDICH (Lund University Digital Interactive Concert Hall) is the initiative that laid the foundation for Kalaudioscope. Funded by Lund University with 3 million SEK over three years (2023-2025) and led by the Faculty of Arts, LUDICH became the academic core from which the broader innovation portfolio Kalaudioscope emerged.

The potential for Kalaudioscope

The innovation portfolio Kalaudioscope solves accessibility for audiences regardless of background, ability and geography. In addition, it offers new business opportunities for the growing live streaming industry, and is also applicable to other industries, also known as "dual use".

Partnership and community

Kalaudioscope brings together a cross-disciplinary circle of researchers, students, businesses and creatives experimenting with new ways of experiencing live and streamed music. This community is foundational for carrying out tests and takes.

Testbeds and takes

Testbeds consisting of curated living labs in real environments are carried out continuously. These are held, for example, at Malmö Opera, on the main stage, on tour or in another environments like Malmö Live and Inter Art Centre. The ’Takes’ are workshoplike gatherings where the portfolio's actors meet to iterate, be inspired, evaluate and discuss the current focus areas. Takes are held every six months and the results lay the foundation for the tests for the coming six months.

At Takes, researchers and students from universities mix with professional artists, musicians and producers as well as actors from the companies involved who, with their expertise and their products, can draw conclusions from the tests. At Takes, users and citizens, the future customers, are involved and provide feedback on prototypes and tests in an invaluable way.

Takes is coordinated by LU but is based on involvement and commitment from the portfolio's parties and provides insights that could not have been foreseen.

”Live streaming is not a fad – it’s a fundamental shift in how we consume media and connect online. Viewers love the authenticity and real-time engagement; creators and businesses love the reach and interaction."
