ASKS – Academic Skills Services
TEACHING AND LEARNING SUPPORT AT LUSEM
Academic Skills Services (ASKS) supports all students in developing their academic skills, such as reading, writing and thinking critically in an academic context. This is done in part through tailor-made interventions in courses and programmes and in part through consultations for students. We also offer a set of self-learning resources on Canvas.
Integrated interventions
We offer tailor-made interventions in courses and programmes where we focus on issues that are relevant for students in a certain course at a certain time. For example, we can host a workshop on building an argument when students are writing a text where they have to argue for something, or a workshop on editing your text just before students need to hand in a text. Other examples of interventions include
- Effective reading strategies
- Time management
- Working in teams
- Writing a literature review
- Getting started on your writing
Please contact us for a meeting to discuss what we can offer based on your needs. We are also happy to talk about how you yourself can support students in developing their academic skills in your courses.
Consultations
We offer consultations for individuals and small groups where we guide students on any aspect of academic study, such as managing your time, speaking up in class or handling a large amount of course literature. We also give feedback on texts with respect to language and structure. If you see a student struggle, please don’t hesitate to refer them to us. All consultations are made by appointment through the ASKS page on the LUSEM web site.

Teaching and Learning platform on Canvas
Our Teaching and Learning platform is an online set of resources that any student or staff member at LUSEM can access by enrolling in our Canvas course. It has been designed as a self-access platform for students to go to as the initial recourse for any questions they may have on any aspect of academic skills, and consists of a mixture of resources (texts, videos and quizzes) that we have either created or linked to from other university websites. There are also links to the booking form and the LUSEM Harvard referencing style guide.
