Revisiting Grounded Theory Method with leading expert: a unique approach to data analysis and data-driven theorising

The Master Class covers key features of grounded theory and a brief history. We then move onto a practical session of GTM coding. We then discuss how the emergent theory might be integrated into the extant literature and how the theory might be extended using theoretical sampling. We will also discuss how to present the emergent theory. 

Key points will be presented, and through a succession of group exercises, those points will both be reinforced and discussed in the context of the participants own research frameworks.

Programme for the Master Class 11 November

Session 1 09.30–10.45 

Objective: 

By the end of the first session, participants will understand the key features of GTM and aspects of its history. We will also take a quick look at computational grounded theory. Participants will be asked to evaluate GTM in the context of their own research.

Session 2 11.00–12.00 

Objective: 

By the end of the second session, participants will have a good understanding of GTM coding stages and will have experienced some coding themselves. Through an example, they will see how coding is an iterative process. 

LUNCH BREAK 

Session 3 13:00–14:30 

Objective: 

By the end of the session, participants will have a good understanding of how to theoretically integrate their theory. Theoretical memos and theoretical sampling will be discussed, as well as ways to present the theory.  

Session 4 15:00–16:00

Objective: 

By the end of this session, participants will have been introduced to broader concepts of theory building, including the use of mechanisms. Glaser’s coding families will also be discussed. 

Professor Cathy Urquhart, a short biography  

Cathy Urquhart is a visiting Professor at the Department of Informatics at Lund University and Professor Emeritus of Digital Business at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, UK. and before returning to the UK in 2009, she worked at the Universities of Tasmania, Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast in Australia, and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. She also worked as a systems analyst for eight years in public sector computing in the U.K. 

Her broad area of research centres round the use of digital innovation for societal good. She is interested in how social media and all forms of ICTs can help us meet societal challenges, such as sustainable development, individual wellbeing, and social justice. She is the author of Grounded Theory for Qualitative Research, a textbook published by Sage. Details of the book can be found here

She also writes regularly on developments in grounded theory and qualitative research methodology in general. She holds or has held various editorial and board positions with the Journal of the Association of Information Systems, Information Technology and Development, European Journal of Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, and MIS Quarterly. She is a subject expert for the Association of Business Schools Scientific Journal Ranking Committee in the UK. She is a Fellow of the Association of Information Systems.
