AI and gaming: Guest lecture with Julian Togelius
Lund University and the Department of Informatics welcome world-leading AI researcher Julian Togelius from the Tandon School of Engineering, New York University, for a guest lecture. Julian conducts research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and games.
He develops methods to make games more fun, easier to design, and more adaptable – and sometimes to create entirely new types of game experiences that are not yet possible. His interests span all kinds of games: from video games to board and card games. With a background in evolutionary computation and neural networks, he has contributed key insights into how AI can be used for creativity, design, and interactivity.
In the lecture, he will address questions such as: What does AI really mean in the context of games? What are his most important contributions to the field? And what lessons from AI and games can inspire the development of digital solutions beyond the world of gaming?
Julian Togelius was recently awarded an honorary doctorate at Malmö University and holds his undergraduate degree from Lund University and a PhD from University of Essex in the UK. On September 25, 2025, he was also invited to join the newly established advisory committee on AI at the game engine developer Unity.
