You are about to defend your thesis, what is it about?
The thesis explores sub-Saharan Africa’s recent development dynamics in a long-run historical context. It focuses on processes of structural change and the formation of social capabilities since independence, analysing how these have interacted with periods of both rapid growth and decline, past and present. The findings reveal that, despite comparable levels of GDP per capita, today’s growth rests on stronger foundations than past growth spurts. Additionally, the study highlights how cycles of growth and contraction may significantly impact the region's long-term potential for economic catch-up.
In three words, how would you describe your years as a PhD student at LUSEM?
Intellectual, insightful, humbling.
What are you up to now?
Currently, I'm preparing for my defence, planning the celebration afterward, and exploring new career directions.
