Title: Talking About Policy: The Impact of Pre-Announcement Communication on Monetary Policy Transmission

Abstract: The paper examines how pre-announcement communication affects the transmission of monetary policy, focusing on the asymmetric impact of high and low communicational spread. By analysing central bankers' speeches leading up to policy announcements, I show that periods with higher spread—where the tone of monetary policy varies more across board members—exhibit different transmission of monetary policy shocks compared to periods with lower spread. Furthermore, when examining the period around the zero lower bound (ZLB), the results indicate that the impact of the spread influences unconventional and conventional monetary policy shocks in significantly different ways.
