Title: What Happens When Older Workers Step Away?
Abstract: Faced with an aging population, many countries are grappling with the challenge of prolonging working lives. However, causal research on the role and impact of employees in the later stages of their careers remains limited. It is still unclear whether older workers represent ’deadwood labor’, contributing to declining productivity and limiting opportunities for younger colleagues, or whether they possess specialized expertise that makes them valuable assets for their organizations. Exploiting a reduction in the early retirement age in Norway from 64 to 62 in October 1997 and to 62 in March 1998, this paper provides empirical evidence that sheds light on these competing perspectives.
