Animals in Markets: surviving, thriving, Entangling Better
Animals abound in the marketplace. Yet, marketing theory and practice rarely notices the entanglements between humans and nonhumans, and studies that do notice interspecies encounters rarely explore how multispecies consumption might be reassembled so all can thrive.
This talk identifies animals impacted, instrumentalised, included, influencing, implicit, and insulated in markets. Building on this conceptual framework, the talk then considers how and why consumers work toward better entanglements with animals.
Jack Waverley (formerly Coffin) is a senior lecturer in marketing and consumer research at the University of Manchester. His work looks at morality in the market, looking beyond individual ethical consumers into the more-than-human webs we weave with animals, AI, and other species. Jack will be visiting us in April and, on Tuesday 21 April, will present his work on animals in markets. We hope you will join us for a lively discussion.
