Workshop on Landscapes and Craft in Scotland

On 23–24 March, the Centre for Aesthetics and Business Creativity (ABC) co-hosted an international workshop on Landscapes and Craft on the Scottish island of Islay, together with the Centre for Organization and Employee Well-Being at the University of Liverpool.

The workshop brought together researchers to explore the role of landscapes in shaping craft knowledge and practices, with a focus on what craft economies can teach us about building a more sustainable relationship between economy and society.

Islay, internationally renowned for its whisky-making tradition, provided an inspiring setting, and participants visited a local distillery as part of the programme.

The event is part of a growing international research network on Craft and Emerging Forms of Organizing, which spans several initiatives:

  • A Standing Working Group at the EGOS Colloquium, whose 2026 theme is Recovering Heritage, Meaningfulness and Tradition Through Craft (egos.org)
  • The East Asian Workshop on Craft and Emerging Forms of Organizing, held annually in Kyoto (yamauchi.net/craft-2025)
  • The Hephaestus EU Horizon project on Craft, New Technologies and Innovative Futures (hephaestuscraft.eu)
  • The Craft Studio initiative (craftresearch.org)
