Why is Europe important? – Welcome to the EU week 2026

A youth waving an EU flag

We at LUSEM are proud to take part in the EU week alongside leading universities across Europe. It’s a chance for discussions, inspiration and views on the future of Europe.

Throughout the week (4-8 May) there are seminars discussions and keynotes available on-site at the participating universities as well as online.

The EU week was initiated by TUM School of Management in Munich and with them and LUSEM there is over a dosen universities across the EU organizing events.

The first keynote is held by EU Commissioner Jessika Roswall, under the title "Circular by Design" on 4 May from 13:00 to 14:00.

It will highlight how water‑related research and innovation are becoming central drivers of Europe’s resilience, competitiveness, and security. Commissioner Roswall will illustrate how environmental policy is evolving from a purely protective instrument into a strategic economic advantage.

The Values of the European Union

From LUSEM our contribution is a case law seminar with students from four different Master’s programs in the fields of law, EU affairs and political science. Senior Lecturer in Business Law Dr Joakim Zander discusses the findings of the court and what the case means for the European Union, both from a legal and a symbolic point of view.

In a groundbreaking ruling of 21 April, the European Court of Justice delivered its opinion in Case C‑769/22 Commission v Hungary (Valeurs de l’Union). In the case, the Court held that the foundational values of the EU, which are expressed in Article 2 of the Treaty on the European Union, can be directly enforced before the Court of Justice. It also held that the national identities of the Member States must be safeguarded, but only in as far as they conform to Article 2 TEU.

The seminar will be available online during the whole week. For this and other information about the week, take a look at:
