Anton is practically a local, having grown up in Hörby, just a half hour drive from Lund. He came to the university straight out of highschool and did his bachelor level studies in political science and economics, earning his degree in political science.
"However, I realized I had enjoyed economic history the most, and I subsequently pursued a master's in it, drawn to its very applied approach to studying how both the economy and society change over time. Eventually, I was enrolled in the PhD program in the project of one of the most inspiring lecturers I have had", says Anton.
The PhD project focused on how people could make a living into old age before the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of modern welfare arrangements in Stockholm. Particularly observing to what extent people could earn a living across the life cycle, save, and rely on support from children in old age.
What has it been like to be a PhD student at LUSEM?
"I would say being a PhD student at LUSEM, particularly in Economic History, is rewarding, as it gives you access to a unique academic environment, given that we have a particularly large Economic History department, compared to almost any other similar department globally. As a PhD student, one is taken seriously, which means both shouldering responsibility for research and teaching and being given a platform to participate in the academic environment. This has been highly rewarding while also proving stressful at times", says Anton Svensson.
What are your plans after the dissertation, and do you have any advice for those just starting their PhD journey?
"I hope to continue my work at the department in the coming years, focusing on the living standards of female-headed households across the life cycle and doing some teaching.
My main advice for new PhDs would be to first take the time to socialize with fellow PhDs and build your network, and secondly, to start early with your research, which will greatly alleviate future stress", Anton Svenson says in closing.
Thankyou Anton, we wish you a successful defense, and all the best for the future!
